Fred Raymond Haynes, '69
Fred R. Haynes of Phoenix, formerly of Russell, Kan., died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan. He was 56.
Fred had been home in Russell for several weeks, traveling to Canada with his mother, when he entered the hospital. The cause of death was a viral infection.
Known as "Old Fred" to his fraternity brothers, he was pledge master to the pledge class of 1970. His keen intellect, calm demeanor and infinite patience made him friend and mentor to many of the underclassmen. The "Old Fred" nickname, a reference to a character in The Beatles' animated film "Yellow Submarine," was earned at a time when we also had a "Young Dave" living in the house, Dave Pyatt.
Fred was born June 29, 1950, in Russell to Darrell E. and Betty Lou (Sublett) Haynes. He was a graduate of Russell High School, the University of Kansas and Arizona State University. He was an independent contract driver.
The funeral was Aug. 22, in Russell City Cemetery. Survivors include his mother, of Russell; and a sister, Kathy Haynes, of Lawrence.
Memorials are suggested to Congregational Church, Russell, or Russell Regional Hospital.
